1 day Safari in Tanzania

So, you have very little time – but you’d like to go on safari and see the animals and experience (at least a little bit) the theatre of the lion all in one day?

This is quite a challenging task. The reason is that the animals can be quite shy and it may take hours of driving before you see anything. Particularly when visiting the Serengeti, it is not uncommon to drive miles of dirt roads to only Wilderbeast. This is not to mention that most of your day may be wasted travelling between the national parks.

With everything considered: by far, the best location for a 1 day safari in Tanzania is the Ngorongoro crater. It contains all of the big 5 in a 12-14 mile wide enclosure. A huge natural wildlife enclosure.

The Ngorongoro Crater

Unlike the other national parks, the Crater contains all of the main safari wildlife in one place. The crater is 102sq miles of crisis crossing pathways and game drives and is surrounded by highlands which make it almost impossible for the animals to leave. The Ngorongoro Crater is considered as a ‘Natural Enclosure’ for a wide range of animals, due to the high ‘walled’ surroundings; despite this around 20% of the Wildebeest and 50% of the Zebra population leave the confines during the rains.

There are around 25,00 large animals that call the crater home; many of which are Ungulates (Horses and Rhinos alongside Pigs and Dogs).  You’re also close to the home of the rare & endangered Black Rhinoceros (estimated at less than 2000 in the world – and followed by armed guards). Expect to see Hippopotamus and the hippo pool, Cape Buffalo, Waterbucks, Flamingos, Crocodiles, the Cheetah & Leopard among others.

If you travel to the Ngorongoro crater, then you’re almost guaranteed to see something amazing. Potentially all of the big 5 at once (we’ve seen 4 of the big five at once). This makes it ideal for a 1 day safari in Tanzania.

What a day Safari will include

The itinerary of your one-day safari will depend on where you are coming from. If you are coming from the airport, then you must consider that at least 2 hours of the day will be taken up with travel to the crater. If you’re already staying close to the crater in somewhere such as Gibbs Farm, then you are only 40 or so minutes from your adventure. We would suggest staying as close to the crater as you can – so you can enjoy the morning sunrise.
