Zanzibar

Most people know that Dar Es Salaam is Tanzania’s economic hub and largest city. Tourists have ventured to Dar Es Salaam for beach holidays on the city’s northern beaches for many, many years. There are several places to go for a Dar Es Salaam beach holiday that could rival even the best Zanzibari beaches: Mbudya, Bongoyo (accessible by boat from the North of the city & hotels) and Kigamboni (Dar Es Salaam’s Southern District).
 

Mbudya Island

Mbudya is somewhat of a local secret; it is the beach that the locals prefer for their weekends relaxing in the sun. The Water here is crystal clear, clean and warm. The beach is white, clean and picturesque. There are walking trails across the Island (watch out for the snakes!) and the island has its own pop up seafood BBQ on the weekends which offers fresh produce right from the sea. It is certainly one of the best places in the whole of Dar Es Salaam to get some Samaki Choma! (grilled fish)

Bongoyo Island

Bongoyo island, Like Mbudya island is accessible by Boat from the north of Dar Es Salaam, and the larger hotels. The Island is spectacularly beautiful and is another firm favorite with the city locals. The Island has large beautiful sandy beaches and picturesque surroundings. Quite often there are water & beach sports to keep you occupied if swimming and soaking up the sun isn't enough. The Island is home to lots of fish and sea wildlife that are close by - local tour guides can show you the best places to see them!

Kigamboni

Kigamboni known and the southern side of Dar Es Salaam. Previously, this area was considered as rural however, in recent times business people from all over the world have considered its natural beauty as too good to miss. These days large hotels, luxury and private beach accommodation is popping up where it can. The beaches here are amazing - picturesque, clean, quiet and largely unknown to outsiders. They are accessible by a bus or car ride from the city centre itself. Kigamboni is not to be missed.
