Growing up in Stone Town, she spoke Arabic, Swahili and even taught herself how to read and write. This is something that was very rare for women in those days. After her parents died she had a very bad relationship with her brothers, which began a long family feud. Despite her solitude which was created by her unhealthy relationship with her family, she was swept away by a German Christian merchant trader, and they fell in love at first sight. Rumors of the time say that after she fell pregnant with his child she had to flee from Zanzibar in fear of her life and ended up taking refuge in Germany.
